Warner Music Group (WMG) has recently reached a settlement in a copyright infringement case with AI music startup Udio. This collaboration was announced by the label on Wednesday, along with the news that a licensing deal has been established for an AI music creation service scheduled to launch in 2026.

According to WMG’s press release, the upcoming platform is described as a “next-generation music creation, listening, and discovery platform” that will utilize generative AI models trained on licensed and authorized music. The company emphasizes that this initiative will not only offer new revenue streams for artists and songwriters but also prioritize the protection of their work.

The subscription-based service will enable users to create remixes, covers, and original compositions using the voices of participating artists and the compositions of songwriters. WMG ensures that proper credit and compensation will be provided to all creators involved. CEO Robert Kyncl expressed the label’s commitment to safeguarding the rights of their artists and songwriters, highlighting Udio’s efforts to ensure authorized and licensed music on their platform.

Notable artists signed to WMG include Lady Gaga, Coldplay, The Weeknd, Sabrina Carpenter, and more, who will likely benefit from this innovative collaboration. Udio’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Sanchez, also shared his excitement about the partnership, emphasizing the platform’s potential to enhance creativity and provide new opportunities for artists and songwriters.

The settlement between WMG and Udio signifies a significant shift in the music industry’s approach to AI technology. Last year, WMG, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment filed lawsuits against Udio and rival AI music platform Suno for copyright infringement. However, it appears that the industry is now embracing AI music technology, as Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are reportedly in discussions to license their work to Udio and Suno.

In a related development, Suno announced a major fundraising achievement on the same day, securing a $250 million Series C round at a post-money valuation of $2.45 billion. This investment round was led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Nvidia’s venture arm NVentures, Hallwood Media, Lightspeed, and Matrix, reflecting growing investor confidence in AI music technology.

Overall, the collaboration between Warner Music Group and Udio represents a forward-thinking approach to leveraging AI in the music industry, opening up new possibilities for artists, songwriters, and music enthusiasts alike. This partnership signals a promising future where technology enhances creativity and fosters greater connection between creators and their audience.
