A young schoolgirl from Gore has recently had a once-in-a-lifetime experience thanks to her winning entry in a nationwide photo competition. Eden Barbour, a 9-year-old student at St Mary’s School, captured a stunning image from the top of East Peak near Gore, showcasing the beautiful Southland landscape.

The competition, titled “Where is my healthy place?”, was organized by the Bupa Foundation, Paralympics New Zealand, and NZ Landcare Trust. The prize for the winning entry was a visit from Paralympian Holly Robinson, who surprised Eden at a school assembly earlier this month.

Holly Robinson, a para athlete who has achieved great success in javelin and shot put at various Paralympic games, spent time with the students answering questions and planting native trees on the school grounds. Eden was thrilled to meet such an accomplished athlete and share the experience with her classmates.

Reflecting on the visit, Eden expressed her excitement at getting to wear Robinson’s bronze medal and hold the shot put she uses. She emphasized that the visit was not just for her but for the entire school community to enjoy.

Robinson, who sees giving back to the community as an important part of her role as an athlete, was delighted to interact with the enthusiastic students. She shared her own journey of being inspired by athletes like Danyon Loader and highlighted the importance of motivating young people to pursue their dreams.

Pedro Sanchez, the managing director of Bupa New Zealand, praised the collaboration between NZ Landcare Trust and Paralympics New Zealand in creating such a meaningful experience for the students. He noted the lasting impact that athletes like Robinson have on inspiring the next generation.

Overall, the visit was a special and memorable occasion for everyone involved, highlighting the power of sports and community engagement.
