Juan Salgado, a 17-year-old high school soccer team captain, tragically lost his life this summer in a senseless act of violence. Salgado was driving two friends home from practice when an unknown assailant opened fire on his vehicle in the 3800 block of West 26th Street on August 19. Thankfully, Salgado’s two passengers, both teenagers, escaped physical harm.

After a thorough investigation, Chicago police were able to identify the gunman as 33-year-old Jesus Pena. Using video footage and phone location data, authorities were able to piece together the events leading up to the shooting. Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman deemed Pena a public safety threat and ordered his detention based on video evidence showing him firing at Salgado’s car. Surveillance footage from Chicago police cameras and a nearby liquor store further corroborated the prosecution’s case, showing Pena’s phone at various locations related to the shooting.

Pena now faces charges of first-degree murder and two counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm in connection with Salgado’s death. The loss of Juan Salgado has been deeply felt by his family, friends, and the community at large. Fr. Brendan Curran described it as a tragic loss of talent, skill, and leadership that will be sorely missed.

The incident serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing gun violence epidemic plaguing cities like Chicago. In the wake of this tragedy, it is crucial for communities to come together and advocate for meaningful change to prevent further senseless loss of life.
