The Apple TV+ series “Smoke” has been making waves with its gripping storyline and stellar cast. Based on the real-life events surrounding arson investigator John Orr, the show follows the twisted tale of Dave Gudsen, played by Taron Egerton, who sets fires while working for the fire department. Jurnee Smollett stars as Michelle Calderone, Dave’s new partner, who is determined to expose his dark secrets.

The show is set in a fictional Pacific Northwest town, where Dave’s fiery rampage puts the entire community at risk. Michelle, a former Marine with a troubled past, is haunted by a traumatic childhood memory that fuels her drive to bring Dave to justice. As the two characters collide in a thrilling cat-and-mouse game, the tension escalates, leading to a fast and clean burn that leaves little behind.

Smollett’s portrayal of Michelle is raw and flawed, showcasing the character’s inner turmoil and self-destructive tendencies. While Michelle’s struggles may be more extreme than Smollett’s own, she finds a universal truth in the character’s creation and destruction cycle. Embracing Michelle’s shortcomings, Smollett brings depth and authenticity to her performance, refusing to play a one-dimensional “badass” woman and instead opting for a more human and relatable portrayal.

The ensemble cast, including Greg Kinnear, John Leguizamo, and Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, adds layers to the narrative, creating a rich tapestry of characters who each have their own motivations and secrets. As the story unfolds over nine gripping episodes, viewers are taken on a rollercoaster ride of suspense and intrigue, culminating in a satisfying conclusion that will leave them craving more.

Critics have praised “Smoke” for its thrilling storytelling and captivating performances, with Variety’s Alison Herman hailing it as a “deeply satisfying” series that delivers a fast-paced and intense viewing experience. With its blend of mystery, drama, and action, “Smoke” is a must-watch for fans of suspenseful television.
