In 2022, Susan Wojcicki, the CEO of YouTube and a mother of five, received a devastating diagnosis of metastatic lung cancer. This news came as a shock, especially considering Susan’s healthy lifestyle and the fact that she had never smoked. Despite her dedication to fighting the disease, Susan passed away the following year.

Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer worldwide, with smoking being the leading cause. However, an increasing number of non-smokers, especially women, are being diagnosed with lung cancer. This raises questions about why lung cancer receives less funding than other less lethal cancers and why cases like Susan’s go undetected until they reach advanced stages.

Susan’s experience highlighted the importance of early detection and research into non-smoking-related causes of lung cancer. She dedicated herself to understanding the disease and looking for answers, even funding a genetic study to explore hereditary risk factors for lung cancer. Despite not finding a genetic cause for her own cancer, Susan’s efforts have contributed to ongoing research in the field.

The stigma associated with lung cancer, often viewed as a self-inflicted disease due to smoking, has hindered research and funding efforts. Changing perceptions and increasing awareness about the various causes of lung cancer, such as radon exposure, air pollution, and genetic factors, are essential steps in improving outcomes for patients.

Susan Wojcicki’s legacy extends beyond her successful career in tech to her advocacy for cancer research and awareness. Her commitment to understanding the complexities of lung cancer and her efforts to support research initiatives will continue to impact future treatments and outcomes for patients. As we honor her memory, we must continue to support scientific research and advancements in cancer care to prevent more lives from being lost to this devastating disease.
