U.S. Banking Giants and Mortgage Lenders Scramble to Assess Data Breach Impact

Reports have surfaced indicating that several U.S. banking giants and mortgage lenders are currently in the process of evaluating the extent of their customers’ data that may have been compromised in a recent cyberattack on a New York-based financial technology company.

The company in question, SitusAMC, which offers technology solutions to a wide range of commercial and real estate financiers, confirmed the occurrence of a data breach on November 12 through a public statement released over the weekend.

According to SitusAMC, cybercriminals managed to access corporate data related to its banking customers’ interactions with the company, as well as sensitive information like accounting records and legal agreements. The exact details and scale of the breach are still being investigated by the company, although they have assured that the incident has been contained and their systems are now operational. Notably, the hackers did not employ encrypting malware, indicating that their primary objective was data exfiltration rather than system destruction.

Industry sources cited by Bloomberg and CNN suggest that SitusAMC has notified major financial institutions such as JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Morgan Stanley about the breach. The company’s client base also includes pension funds and state governments, raising concerns about the potential impact on a significant number of U.S. banking consumers.

Despite SitusAMC’s relatively low profile outside of financial circles, the company plays a crucial role in facilitating regulatory compliance for its clients. It handles vast amounts of confidential banking data on their behalf, processing billions of documents annually related to loans and financial transactions.

When contacted for comment, representatives from Citigroup, JPMorgan Chase, and Morgan Stanley remained tight-lipped about the breach and any potential communication with the hackers. SitusAMC’s CEO, Michael Franco, also did not respond to inquiries about the incident.

The FBI has launched an investigation into the data breach at SitusAMC, although the agency has not provided any official statements regarding the matter.
