WELCOME TO A NEW FRONTIER IN SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH:
Today, President Donald J. Trump has taken a significant step by signing an Executive Order to launch the Genesis Mission, a bold initiative aimed at revolutionizing scientific research through artificial intelligence (AI) and expediting the pace of discovery.
- The Genesis Mission assigns the Secretary of Energy the task of harnessing the capabilities of our National Laboratories, bringing together the nation’s top intellects, cutting-edge computing power, and extensive scientific datasets into a cohesive research network.
- This Order mandates the Department of Energy to develop a closed-loop AI experimentation framework that will unify our premier supercomputers and unique data resources to create foundational scientific models and enhance robotic laboratories.
- The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST) is directed to oversee this national initiative, ensuring the seamless integration of data and infrastructure across the Federal government.
- The Secretary of Energy, APST, and the Special Advisor for AI & Crypto will partner with academic institutions and private sector innovators to bolster the Genesis Mission’s efforts.
- Key focus areas encompass pressing scientific challenges that could significantly enhance our national, economic, and health security, such as biotechnology, critical materials, nuclear fission and fusion energy, space exploration, quantum information science, and advancements in semiconductors and microelectronics.
LEVERAGING AI FOR NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH:
Through the Genesis Mission, the Trump Administration aims to substantially boost the productivity and efficacy of Federal research and development over the coming decade.
- Despite a marked increase in research funding since the 1990s, we find ourselves at a standstill—new drug approvals have decreased, and the output per researcher has diminished, demanding more personnel for the same results.
- By integrating AI as a pivotal instrument in scientific inquiry, the methodology of research is set to be transformed.
- AI can create models for protein structures and innovative materials, design and scrutinize experiments, and synthesize and produce new data with unprecedented speed and efficiency. What previously took years could soon be accomplished in mere weeks or months.
- To achieve these ambitious goals, AI requires access to vast amounts of organized, high-quality data and formidable computing power. Fortunately, these resources are already embedded within the DOE’s National Laboratories. The Genesis Mission will exploit this existing data infrastructure, fostering collaboration among various Federal research agencies and the private sector to achieve breakthroughs that were once deemed unattainable, all while ensuring America remains at the forefront of the AI race.
FORTIFYING AMERICA’S AI LEADERSHIP:
President Trump is unwavering in his commitment to solidifying America’s leadership in AI, aiming to usher in a new era characterized by human advancement, economic vitality, and enhanced national security.
- Earlier this year, President Trump signed an Executive Order reversing detrimental AI policies established under the Biden Administration, reinforcing America’s preeminence in AI technology.
- In April, he took further steps by signing an Executive Order aimed at promoting AI education for the youth of America.
- In July, additional Executive Orders were enacted to curb “woke” AI initiatives within the Federal government and to advocate for the export of comprehensive American AI technologies.
- Furthermore, in July, the President unveiled America’s AI Action Plan, a strategic framework outlining nearly a hundred Federal initiatives designed to fast-track American AI innovation, establish AI infrastructure domestically, and lead in international diplomacy and security.
- This AI Action Plan emphasizes the importance of investing in AI-enabled scientific research, including directives to develop world-class datasets.
- In September, President Trump signed an Executive Order to leverage AI innovation in the fight against pediatric cancer, building on the Childhood Cancer Data Initiative he launched in 2019 to collect and analyze data related to childhood cancer.
