Today, Melania and I stand with American Catholics and people of faith around the globe to honor the remarkable legacy of Father Stanley Rother. He was an Oklahoma farm boy who became the first American-born martyr to be beatified by the Catholic Church, and he was a staunch advocate for human dignity, sacrificing his life to shine the light of Jesus Christ in the midst of profound darkness.

Born in Oklahoma in 1935, Father Rother was ordained as a Roman Catholic priest at 28. Guided by the values of faith, discipline, duty, and sacrifice inherent in Oklahoma’s work ethic, he embraced the motto of Saint Augustine upon his ordination: “For my benefit I am a Christian, for the benefit of others I am a priest.” These words defined his life and priestly mission until his final moments.

In 1968, a few years after his ordination, Father Rother embarked on a missionary journey, leaving the United States for Guatemala’s war-torn highlands, then engulfed in conflict. Despite the forced disappearance and brutal murder of thousands of Catholics during the Guatemalan Civil War, he dedicated 13 years to spreading the Gospel to those suffering from poverty and violence. He translated sacred Scripture, helped establish a school, a hospital, and the region’s first Catholic radio station, embodying Christ’s call to “make disciples of all nations.”

His courageous pastoral and humanitarian efforts eventually posed a threat to the authoritarian Guatemalan regime. Over a decade into his mission, his name appeared on a hit list, forcing him to seek temporary refuge in Oklahoma. Despite the significant danger, Father Rother returned to Guatemala a few months later, refusing to desert his community in their time of need. “The shepherd cannot run at the first sign of danger,” he wrote in a 1980 letter.

Forty-five years ago today, around 1:00 A.M. on July 28, 1981, three masked men entered Father Rother’s rectory and shot him twice in the head, executing him brutally. He was 46 years old.

In the decades following his tragic death, Father Rother has remained a symbol of courage, selfless service, and devotion to God. In 2017, he was recognized as the first American-born martyr to be beatified by the Roman Catholic Church. The Blessed Stanley Rother Shrine in Oklahoma City has since become a significant pilgrimage site, drawing hundreds of thousands of visitors. Father Rother continues to inspire deep devotion among Catholics and is a source of immense pride for Oklahoma. Every day, countless priests, pastors, chaplains, and spiritual leaders aspire to follow his enduring legacy of strength, compassion, humility, service, generosity, and perseverance.

Today, we reflect on how Father Rother’s life and martyrdom exemplify America’s rich tradition of religious liberty. In his memory, we pledge to remain vigilant to ensure our cherished freedom withstands all challenges. With profound pride, we recognize that America’s missionary spirit and generosity have been, and will continue to be, among the greatest contributors to peace, justice, and human flourishing throughout history. Above all, we pray that every believer, every advocate of freedom, and every seeker of truth will always remember the name and cherish the story of Father Stanley Rother.
