Jose Yorwin Marquez (Chicago Police Department)

A Venezuelan migrant is being held in custody after being accused by prosecutors of dragging a police officer with his car during a traffic stop on Chicago’s South Side. The migrant allegedly also bit and punched officers, threatening to kill one of them.

Jose Yorwin Marquez, 22, faces charges that include two counts of aggravated battery to a peace officer, two counts of resisting or obstructing a peace officer, as well as several traffic violations, such as driving without having ever been issued a driver’s license.

According to a detention petition, Chicago police stopped Marquez around 10:30 p.m. on July 9 in the 9700 block of South Princeton Avenue for minor traffic infractions, including a non-functioning headlight.

Prosecutors claim Marquez initially exited his 2008 Ford Focus but then reentered the vehicle and attempted to drive away, knocking one officer to the ground and dragging another. However, he did not get far, as his Ford Fusion ended up in a ditch, according to a CPD report.

Following the crash, officers struggled to arrest him as Marquez reportedly told one officer, “You’re gonna die, bro!” before biting the officer on the left forearm and punching that officer and another.

The detention petition stated that prosecutors believe the officers avoided serious harm “due to luck” rather than any lack of intent from Marquez. Judge James Costello approved the state’s request to keep Marquez detained until his trial.
