Winseed, a Canterbury-based vegetable seed exporter and breeding company, is looking to maintain and expand its 60% market share of beetroot seed sales in India.

India, with the world’s largest population, has a vegetable seed industry growing at a rate of 8% annually.

Winseed’s beetroot varieties are in high demand in India, where it holds a significant market share. The company also supplies its seed range, primarily consisting of carrot and beetroot varieties, to New Zealand and Egypt.

To further enhance its offerings, Winseed is planning to develop new vegetable seed varieties at Carrfields’ new research and development site in Spring Farm, south of Ashburton. The first phase of this multimillion-dollar project is set to be completed within the next year.

With a focus on India, Winseed aims to introduce improved high-performing varieties to the market. The company has been exporting seeds to India for the past decade and has a dedicated team of over 40 staff based in Hyderabad.

CEO Tom Sherratt expressed the company’s commitment to defending its market share in India against global competitors. He emphasized the importance of continuous innovation and development to stay ahead in the industry.

Winseed currently offers five carrot seed varieties and three beetroot varieties, with plans to streamline its product range for different markets and growing conditions.

Mr. Sherratt highlighted the recent acquisition of beetroot plant genetics from a leading French company, which will be instrumental in developing new varieties. This genetic diversity allows Winseed to create innovative products tailored to consumer preferences.

Beetroot’s popularity in India is on the rise, driven by a growing middle class seeking high-quality vegetables with superior taste and nutritional value. Winseed aims to meet this demand by delivering juicier, crunchier vegetables with extended shelf life.

The company’s research and development efforts extend to a new facility near Ashburton, equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure for breeding and developing novel vegetable varieties.

By establishing a presence in Egypt, Winseed is strategically positioned to serve the North African and Middle Eastern markets. The company plans to introduce new beetroot and carrot varieties tailored to the region’s specific growing conditions.

Overall, Winseed’s dedication to innovation and quality places it at the forefront of the global vegetable seed industry, with a strong focus on meeting the evolving needs of consumers around the world.
