A shocking incident occurred on board a Norwegian Cruise Line ship where a Florida lawyer, Phillip Ortiz, allegedly assaulted an elderly passenger, leaving him unconscious. The 38-year-old attorney reportedly attacked the 67-year-old man after being told he couldn’t access a restricted hallway on the ship. Ortiz responded aggressively, pushing the victim and initiating a physical altercation that led to the elderly man being knocked out with Ortiz’s full weight on him.
The victim, who was unconscious and without a pulse, was attended to by witnesses who performed CPR until he regained consciousness. He was later rushed to the University of Miami Hospital for further treatment. Security footage on the cruise ship corroborated the victim and witnesses’ accounts of the incident, leading to Ortiz’s arrest on charges of aggravated battery on a person over 65 years old.
Ortiz, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, had his attorney, Stephan Lopez, place blame on the victim, alleging that he was intoxicated and obstructing Ortiz and his wife from reaching their children. Lopez claimed that the victim was physically stronger than Ortiz and had instigated the altercation by assaulting Ortiz’s wife and preventing access to their children by closing a door behind them.
Despite the defense’s claims, Ortiz was released on bond with a restraining order preventing him from contacting the victim. The incident has raised concerns about safety and security on cruise ships, highlighting the need for proper protocols to prevent such violent altercations from occurring in the future. It serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting rules and regulations in shared spaces to ensure the well-being of all passengers on board.
