South Africa emerged victorious in the second Test against Team India, securing a comprehensive 2-0 whitewash and strengthening their position in the World Test Championship race. The Proteas delivered a dominant performance in Guwahati on Wednesday, November 26, leaving India with much to ponder in terms of their tactics and team selection.

Gautam Gambhir and Rishabh Pant, the brains behind India’s strategy, made some questionable decisions throughout the Test series. The pressure is mounting on the head coach to revamp the team’s approach in red-ball cricket and steer them towards success.

Here, we dissect two mistakes and one masterstroke made by India in the second Test against South Africa.

Mistake – Nitish Kumar Reddy’s Inclusion Lacked Purpose

Nitish Kumar Reddy, the all-rounder chosen by Gambhir, failed to make a significant impact in the Test match. His bowling contributions were minimal, with just 10 uneventful overs bowled. Moreover, Reddy’s batting position beyond No. 6 seemed unjustified, especially considering his recent struggles with form. India would have been better off opting for a specialist batter instead of a bits-and-pieces player like Reddy in the longest format of the game.

Masterstroke – Utilizing Kuldeep Yadav’s Batting Skills

Kuldeep Yadav showcased his batting prowess in the Guwahati Test, displaying resilience and composure on a challenging pitch. His 134-ball innings in the first innings earned him a promotion to No. 4 in the second innings, where he continued to hold the fort with solid defense. Kuldeep’s strategic batting approach played a crucial role in guiding India through the tough phases of the match.

Mistake – Rishabh Pant’s Poor Bowling Changes

Rishabh Pant’s captaincy debut was marred by several tactical errors in the field. His bowling changes were questionable, and his field placements lacked creativity. Pant’s reluctance to bowl his spinners in extended spells and underutilization of key bowlers like Kuldeep Yadav were glaring shortcomings. India expected more from Pant, a seasoned Test player, in terms of strategic acumen and decision-making.

In conclusion, India’s defeat against South Africa highlighted the need for introspection and refinement in their game plan. With the World Test Championship at stake, Gambhir and Pant must address the flaws exposed in the series and make calculated decisions to propel India towards success in the red-ball format.
