A Tribute to Retired Deputy Chief James “Jim” Riches Sr.
On Thanksgiving Day, New York City lost a hero. Retired Deputy Chief James “Jim” Riches Sr., a highly revered firefighter who rushed to the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, passed away at the age of 74. His son, Jimmy Jr., perished in the attacks, and Riches spent months aiding in recovery efforts.
Deputy Chief Riches, who served in the department for 30 years, succumbed to a 9/11-related illness, a testament to his unwavering commitment to serving his city. The Uniformed Firefighters Association of Greater New York paid tribute to his dedication and leadership throughout his career.

Riches, a devoted smoke eater, leaves behind a legacy of service and sacrifice. Despite the tragedy of losing his son on 9/11, he continued to search for victims at Ground Zero, finding closure only when he located his son’s body in 2002.

Riches went on to advocate for 9/11-related issues, testifying before various agencies and demanding accountability from public officials. His dedication to honoring the memory of the fallen firefighters, including his son, inspired all who knew him.

Riches leaves behind a loving family, including three children who followed in his footsteps as FDNY firefighters. His impact on the firefighting community and the city of New York will never be forgotten.
Visitation details for those wishing to pay their respects have been provided. Let us remember and honor the life of Retired Deputy Chief James “Jim” Riches Sr., a true hero of the FDNY.
