Legendary captain MS Dhoni recently shared a heartfelt wish for Team India during a private event amidst the ODI series against South Africa. Dhoni expressed his desire for both the Men’s and Women’s teams to clinch numerous trophies in the years to come. Reflecting on his illustrious career, Dhoni highlighted the 2011 World Cup final as a pinnacle moment. The 2011 World Cup, held in India, saw Dhoni lead the team to victory against Sri Lanka at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.
Recalling the electrifying atmosphere before the final match, Dhoni reminisced, “It is about the 2011 World Cup. It was 15-20 minutes before the final. Wankhede is not a very big stadium but all the noise stays inside. The whole stadium started to chant Vande Mataram. It was not synchronised but standing in the middle, you could feel it moving around. In my career, I would say that was the best atmosphere and feeling I had at that point of time.”
Despite acknowledging the challenge of recreating such a moment, Dhoni expressed his belief in India’s ability to secure victories both at home and overseas. He optimistically stated, “It is very difficult to recreate that kind of moment. India will win again, the Women’s team will win, the Men’s team will win, they will win in India and outside India as well, may god make them win 100 times.”
Looking back at India’s journey to World Cup glory under Dhoni’s leadership, the team’s triumph in the 2011 tournament marked a significant milestone. After a 28-year wait since their first World Cup win in 1983, India secured their second title in 2011. Dhoni’s squad navigated their way through the tournament, defeating formidable opponents like Australia and Pakistan before claiming victory against Sri Lanka in the final.
In a bittersweet turn of events, the Men’s team narrowly missed out on World Cup glory in 2023, succumbing to Australia in the final. However, the Women’s team brought pride to the nation by clinching their maiden ICC trophy in the 2025 Women’s World Cup, held in India. With the Women in Blue emerging victorious, Dhoni’s wish for multiple trophies for both the Men’s and Women’s teams seems to be on the path to fulfillment.
As India continues its quest for cricketing excellence, the legacy of MS Dhoni’s leadership and unwavering belief in the team’s success serve as a guiding light for future generations of Indian cricketers. The journey towards achieving greatness on the global stage remains a collective endeavor, fueled by passion, dedication, and a shared commitment to hoist the Indian flag high in the realm of international cricket.
