The MLB Winter Meetings are set to be a hotbed of activity, with big-market clubs eyeing major moves in free agency and trades. One of the biggest names in the rumor mill is Detroit Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal. The two-time defending American League Cy Young winner is heading towards free agency after the 2026 season, and with a potential contract value of around $400 million, the Tigers are unlikely to keep him long-term.

Reports suggest that the Tigers are open to listening to offers for Skubal this offseason or potentially before the trade deadline in his contract year. MLB insider Jon Heyman revealed on a recent live stream that the Tigers are willing to entertain offers for Skubal, although the price tag for the young superstar would be astronomical.

Drawing comparisons to the Boston Red Sox’s trade of Mookie Betts before his contract year, Heyman highlighted the potential risks and rewards of trading a player of Skubal’s caliber. While the Tigers may be open to offers, they are likely to hold out for a significant return, considering the impact Skubal has on their roster.

In addition to the Skubal saga, reliever Edwin Diaz is also attracting attention from two East Coast contenders, the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays. Diaz, a three-time All-Star, opted out of his contract with the Mets and is now in the sights of both teams as they look to bolster their bullpen.

Heyman noted that the Blue Jays, in particular, are eager to make a splash in the pitching market after signing starter Dylan Cease to a lucrative deal. With other pitching options available, including Josh Hader, Kyle Finnegan, Pete Fairbanks, and Kenley Jansen, the Blue Jays are looking to solidify their staff for a potential World Series run.

Overall, the MLB Winter Meetings promise to be a whirlwind of activity, with big-name players like Skubal and Diaz potentially on the move. Fans can expect plenty of drama and excitement as teams jockey for position in the offseason market. Stay tuned for more updates as the Winter Meetings unfold.
