Aetna Health Insurance Unit Implements New Prior Authorization Process

In a move to uphold the health insurance industry’s commitment to reducing the need for prior authorization, CVS Health’s Aetna health insurance unit has announced that it will be integrating pharmacy prescriptions and medical procedures into a single clinical review process.

The president of the health insurer, Steve Nelson, is scheduled to speak at the annual Forbes Healthcare Summit where he will discuss various business practices that aim to improve health outcomes and enhance the overall patient experience. Nelson emphasized the shift towards a consumer-driven solutions mindset, moving away from a transactional approach.

One of the key changes introduced by Aetna is the bundling of prior authorizations within the enrollee’s medical benefits. This means that individuals diagnosed with a specific condition will only require a single prior authorization for all related treatments and medications.

Earlier this year, Aetna, along with other major health insurers such as Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Humana, made a commitment to streamline and simplify the prior authorization process. This initiative was part of a broader effort led by America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association to improve decision timelines, increase transparency, and expand access to quality care.

Physicians have long criticized the prior authorization process for causing delays in treatment, compromising patient health, and creating unnecessary administrative burdens. A survey conducted by the American Medical Association in 2023 revealed that nearly 30% of physicians viewed prior authorization as a barrier to patient access to essential services.

Aetna’s new bundling approach will initially focus on women seeking in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatments, with plans to extend this model to other conditions and diseases in the future. Under this system, healthcare providers will only need to submit a single medical prior authorization, and if approved, the associated medications covered under Aetna’s pharmacy benefit will automatically be approved as well.

This innovative approach marks a significant step towards simplifying the healthcare system, making it easier for consumers to navigate and access personalized solutions. Aetna’s commitment to improving the patient experience reflects a broader industry shift towards enhancing healthcare delivery and outcomes for all stakeholders.
