A Chicago Man Found Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity After Fatally Stabbing Another Man with a Plastic Fork

A Chicago man, Daniel Macias, has been found not guilty by reason of insanity for the fatal stabbing of 49-year-old Christopher Samaniego in an Irving Park alley. The incident occurred on June 28, 2023, when Macias claimed he felt threatened by a plastic fork.

Surveillance footage showed Macias following Samaniego into the alley behind the 3600 block of North Kedzie Avenue. As the two men confronted each other, Macias pulled out a knife while Samaniego brandished a plastic fork. Macias then lunged at Samaniego, stabbing him multiple times before the victim succumbed to his injuries.

Following the attack, a witness called 911 as Samaniego tried to flee the scene. Macias, who was later apprehended, was reported to have mental health issues that may have influenced his actions that led to the stabbing.

After a bench trial, Judge Ursula Walowski ruled that Macias met the legal definition of insanity at the time of the incident. As a result, Macias has been ordered to undergo inpatient treatment while awaiting placement by the Illinois Department of Human Services.

This tragic event showcases the importance of mental health awareness and the impact it can have on individuals’ actions. It serves as a reminder of the need for proper support and treatment for those struggling with mental health issues.
