Former cricketer Mohammad Kaif recently shared his thoughts on the exclusion of young Indian batsman Rinku Singh from the T20I squad for the upcoming series against South Africa. With India gearing up to host the Proteas for a five-match series starting on December 9, Kaif highlighted the tough decision to leave out Rinku Singh.
Despite Rinku Singh not making it to the 15-man squad, Kaif pointed out that there was no other player who could have been dropped to accommodate the return of star all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who was recovering from a left quadricep injury. Kaif mentioned that Rinku was part of the Asia Cup 2025 squad but did not get a chance to play in any matches, including the final.
While acknowledging that Rinku might feel it was unfair to be excluded, Kaif supported the selectors’ decision in this case. He emphasized that with Hardik Pandya’s return, there was limited room for changes in the squad, and Rinku had to make way for the all-rounder. Kaif expressed his confidence in Rinku’s future, predicting that the talented batsman would eventually become an all-format player for the Indian team in the next two years.
Rinku Singh, who made his international debut in 2023, has featured in two ODIs and 35 T20Is so far. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya, who missed recent matches due to injury, has been working on regaining his form. The all-rounder played a couple of matches for Baroda in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he impressed with a blistering 77 off 42 balls against Punjab. With his return to the Indian squad for the T20Is against South Africa, the team will be counting on him to deliver consistent performances leading up to the 2026 T20 World Cup.
As India prepares for the upcoming series against South Africa, the inclusion of Hardik Pandya and the absence of Rinku Singh have sparked discussions among cricket enthusiasts. Kaif’s insights shed light on the tough decisions faced by selectors and the challenges of balancing a competitive squad. With promising talents like Rinku Singh and experienced players like Hardik Pandya in the mix, the Indian team aims to continue its success in the T20 format under the leadership of captain Virat Kohli.
