Eternity Film Review: A Sweet, High-Concept Romantic Comedy

The romantic comedy film Eternity offers a refreshing take on the classic love triangle storyline. Directed by David Freyne, the movie follows the story of elderly couple Joan and Larry as they navigate the afterlife after their deaths. Joan, who has terminal cancer, and Larry, who chokes on a pretzel at their great-grandchild’s gender reveal party, are de-aged and find themselves on a train headed to The Junction, where they must choose their ideal afterlife.

Starring Elizabeth Olsen as Joan, Miles Teller as Larry, and Callum Turner as Joan’s first husband Luke, Eternity explores themes of love, loss, and second chances. The film’s concept, penned by Pat Cunnane, topped The Black List in 2022 before being picked up and funded by A24, known for producing unique and original films.

The Junction, where the characters must choose their afterlife, is depicted as a quirky and dated complex with various themed options like Beach World, Mountain World, Capitalist World, and Nudist World. The film also features Afterlife Coordinators, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph and John Early, who assist the deceased in making their decision.

Director David Freyne successfully brings the ensemble cast together and utilizes imaginative techniques to create the world of the afterlife. The film also includes nods to queer culture, adding depth to the storyline.

While Eternity is not without its flaws, such as missed opportunities for further exploration of certain themes and predictable moments, it offers an enjoyable and heartwarming viewing experience. As the holiday season approaches, Eternity provides a cozy alternative to traditional Christmas movies.

Eternity is set to open in the UK on 5 December, offering audiences a charming and imaginative take on the romantic comedy genre.
