Further insights are emerging about OpenAI’s enigmatic new hardware venture, previously characterized as an AI-driven smart speaker that represents the âphysical embodimentâ of ChatGPT.
Bloomberg now reports that the device will feature a âdonut shape,â specifically designed for easy portability around the home, suitable for placement on surfaces like bedside tables or kitchen counters.
Constructed from âhigh-quality metal,â the device is expected to have a âpremium appearance,â and intriguingly, it will include unique âmoving parts,â as per sources cited by Bloomberg.
The price of this device might exceed that of typical smart speakers, potentially ranging from $300 to $400 per unit. For context, most of Amazon’s smart speakers are priced between $40 and $240.
In essence, this is an expensive AI-enabled donut-shaped speaker with moving components. The rationale behind OpenAI’s foray into smart home devices is to further integrate ChatGPT into everyday life. However, historically, smart speakers haven’t always yielded profits, making this a potentially challenging market to penetrate, especially with a high price tag.
The device, which is being developed in collaboration with LoveFrom, the design studio established by renowned Apple developer Jony Ive, is anticipated to be launched around 2027, according to Bloomberg.
OpenAI’s entry into the hardware market hasn’t been smooth. The company is currently facing a lawsuit from Apple, which accuses the AI firm of misappropriating trade secrets. OpenAI has refuted these allegations.
