OpenAI has been facing backlash from its paying subscribers for displaying promotional messages within ChatGPT, the company’s language model platform. While OpenAI has denied running ads or tests for advertising on ChatGPT, the company’s chief research officer, Mark Chen, admitted that they “fell short” with recent promotional messages and are working to improve the user experience.

The controversy arose when users reported seeing promotional messages for companies like Peloton and Target while using ChatGPT. In response, OpenAI clarified that they were only testing ways to showcase apps built on the ChatGPT app platform that was announced in October, with no financial component involved in these suggestions. Despite this explanation, some users remained skeptical and criticized the company for displaying what they perceived as ads to paying subscribers.

OpenAI executives, including Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, reassured users that there were no live tests for ads on the platform. Turley emphasized that any future advertising endeavors would be approached thoughtfully to maintain the trust users have in ChatGPT. However, Chen acknowledged the need for better handling of content that resembles ads and promised to improve the model’s precision while implementing controls for users to adjust their ad preferences.

Earlier this year, OpenAI hired Fidji Sumo, a former executive at Instacart and Facebook, as CEO of Applications with expectations of building up the company’s advertising business. However, recent reports suggest that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has declared a “code red,” prioritizing efforts to enhance the quality of ChatGPT and delaying other projects, including advertising initiatives.

As OpenAI navigates the complexities of balancing user experience with potential revenue streams, the company remains committed to refining ChatGPT and addressing user concerns around advertising. With a focus on building trust and improving the platform’s capabilities, OpenAI aims to provide a seamless and valuable experience for all users.
