Jonathan Bailey
I May Have Cursed on One of My First Projects!!!

Published December 7, 2025 5:05 PM PST

Jonathan Bailey shared a hilarious anecdote about his early days in the theater world, revealing a superstition mishap that may have led to a disastrous show.

During an episode of “Actors on Actors” with David Corenswet, Bailey reminisced about his involvement in the 1996 show “Les Enfants du Paradis” directed by Simon Callow. Before the performance, Bailey accidentally uttered the forbidden word “Macbeth,” a superstition known to bring bad luck to theaters.

According to the superstition, saying “Macbeth” in a theater is believed to bring about misfortune. True to the superstition, the show did not go well, leading Bailey to humorously blame himself for the production’s failure.

Despite the superstition, Bailey’s career has flourished, with his standout performances in “Wicked” and its sequel “Wicked: For Good” earning him widespread acclaim.

While the incident may have been a mere superstition, Bailey now treads carefully with his words, knowing that in the world of theater, even the slightest misstep can have unexpected consequences.

Jonathan Bailey’s story serves as a reminder of the quirky traditions and beliefs that are deeply ingrained in the world of theater, adding a touch of mystery and intrigue to the performing arts.

As Bailey continues to captivate audiences with his talent, one thing is for certain – he’ll always be mindful of the words he speaks on and off the stage, lest he inadvertently invite the wrath of theatrical superstitions.
