Meta, the parent company of Facebook, recently announced the acquisition of Limitless, an AI startup previously known as Rewind. This acquisition marks a new chapter for Limitless, as the company shifts its focus away from selling hardware devices to supporting existing customers for a year.

Limitless gained recognition for its AI-powered pendant designed to record conversations. However, with the acquisition by Meta, the company will no longer sell its hardware devices and will cease other functionalities such as its non-pendant software “Rewind,” which converted users’ desktop activity into searchable records.

Founded by Brett Bejcek and Dan Siroker, former executives at Optimizely, Limitless transitioned into the AI hardware market last year with the launch of its pendant priced at $99. The wearable device could be attached to clothing or worn as a necklace, offering a unique way to interact with AI technology.

In a statement, Limitless expressed alignment with Meta’s vision to democratize personal superintelligence through AI-enabled wearables. Meta, known for its AR/AI glasses like Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta, sees Limitless as a valuable addition to its wearables division within Reality Labs.

The decision to join forces with Meta comes amidst growing competition in the AI hardware market, with industry giants like OpenAI also developing their own devices. Siroker reflected on the changing landscape, stating, “The world has changed. We’re no longer working on a weird fringe idea. We’re building a future that now seems inevitable. We’re not alone.”

Meta’s acquisition of Limitless signifies a strategic move towards advancing AI-enabled wearables, a market segment poised for exponential growth. As part of the transition, Limitless will provide customers with options to export or delete their data, ensuring a smooth transition for users.

Having secured over $33 million in funding from prominent investors like a16z, First Round Capital, and NEA, Limitless is well-positioned to drive innovation in the evolving AI landscape.
