Here’s What To Know As Lawmakers Reveal New Details On U.S. Boat Strikes

The U.S. military engaged in a controversial operation in international waters near Venezuela, targeting a boat suspected of carrying drugs. Congressional lawmakers are seeking answers about the attack and the legal justification behind President Trump’s military campaign.

The military’s first strike on a drug boat resulted in the deaths of two survivors who were clinging to the wreckage. This incident, along with the broader military campaign that has destroyed multiple vessels and killed numerous individuals, is now facing intense scrutiny from lawmakers.

Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley clarified that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth did not issue a directive to “kill them all,” but the mission’s objective was clear – to eliminate the drugs and the 11 individuals on board. This new lethal tactic is aimed at deterring drug trafficking to the U.S., but it has raised concerns about human rights and the treatment of American troops.

Lawmakers have learned that the boat was heading to link up with another vessel bound for Suriname before the attack. The unfolding events, along with the legal basis for the military operation, are crucial factors in the ongoing investigation by Congress.

The legal opinion behind the military campaign, classified by the Trump administration, has drawn attention for its broad definition of drug traffickers as terrorist threats. Lawmakers are pushing for the release of this legal argument to better understand the justification for the military’s actions.

As the investigation continues, lawmakers are probing the orders and instructions that led to the operation, including the rules of engagement for soldiers. They also want to hear from key military officials involved in the campaign, such as Admiral Alvin Holsey, to shed light on the decision-making process.

Despite criticism from Capitol Hill, Defense Secretary Hegseth remains resolute in his approach. The military recently announced another strike on a suspected drug-carrying boat, further escalating the campaign’s death toll.

As lawmakers delve deeper into the details of the operation, the future of Trump’s military campaign and its adherence to legal and ethical standards hang in the balance.
