Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on Nathan Lyon’s recent statement following his exclusion from the Australian team for the second Test in Brisbane during the Ashes 2025-26 series. Lyon, a key player for Australia, expressed his disappointment openly, stating that he felt ‘absolutely filthy’ about being dropped for the first time in a home Test since 2012.

In response to Lyon’s comments, Ashwin was asked about Indian players’ ability to express themselves in a similar manner. Ashwin acknowledged that while Indian players are technically allowed to speak their minds, there is a fear of facing collateral damage if they were to do so. He cited the example of Chris Gayle and young Indian talent Abhishek Sharma, highlighting the double standards that exist within the cricketing world.

Despite Lyon’s disappointment, Australia went on to win the second Test against England, taking a 2-0 lead in the five-match series. The victory showcased Australia’s depth and resilience, even in the absence of a seasoned player like Lyon.

Ashwin further touched upon the topic of player freedom by reflecting on his own shock retirement from international cricket. The legendary spinner retired midway through the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, citing the lack of playing time and the desire to spend more time with his family as key factors in his decision.

In a candid conversation with Rahul Dravid on his YouTube channel, Ashwin revealed that being constantly overlooked for away tours and spending time on the bench ultimately led him to retire from international cricket. His decision shed light on the challenges faced by players in the modern game, emphasizing the importance of mental well-being and work-life balance in a high-pressure environment.

Ultimately, both Lyon’s exclusion and Ashwin’s retirement serve as reminders of the complex nature of professional cricket and the personal sacrifices that players often make in pursuit of success. As the game continues to evolve, it is essential for players and administrators alike to prioritize the holistic well-being of individuals both on and off the field.

As the cricketing world navigates through various challenges and transitions, the stories of Lyon and Ashwin serve as poignant reminders of the human side of sport, shedding light on the sacrifices and struggles that often go unnoticed in the pursuit of glory.
