A tragic incident unfolded in California nearly a decade ago when a mother, Cherie Townsend, committed a heinous act in an attempt to fund her daughter’s cheerleading camp. Susan Leeds, a retired nurse, fell victim to Townsend’s desperate need for money, resulting in a brutal murder. Townsend was recently convicted of first-degree murder for stabbing Leeds 17 times in her Mercedes-Benz SUV at the Peninsula shopping mall parking garage on May 3, 2018.

The motive behind the crime was Townsend’s desire to steal $2,000 to send her daughter to a cheerleading competition in Florida. Prosecutors revealed that Townsend was scouting for an “easy target” to rob at the upscale shopping promenade when she came across Leeds. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department initially identified Townsend as a suspect and arrested her, but she was released due to insufficient evidence. However, she was arrested again in August 2023 and charged with the murder.

During the trial, Townsend’s defense argued that there was no direct evidence linking her to the murder, such as DNA, fingerprints, witnesses, or surveillance footage. Despite this, a criminologist testified that DNA traces found on a cellphone under Leeds’ SUV matched Townsend’s. The phone initially believed to belong to the victim had a picture of Townsend when powered on, providing crucial evidence against her.

Evidence presented in court indicated Townsend’s desperation for funds, including considering a GoFundMe but rejecting it to spare her daughter embarrassment. She also texted her son’s former football coach about obtaining a fake ID and researched Walmart’s ID verification for credit card transactions. Leeds, a dedicated nurse who had cared for patients with Type 1 diabetes, tragically lost her life in this senseless act of violence.

Fred Leeds, the victim’s stepson, expressed the profound impact of his stepmother’s murder on their family. He described Susan as a kind and compassionate individual who would go above and beyond for others. Sadly, Susan’s husband, who passed away in 2022, never witnessed justice served for his beloved wife. Townsend is awaiting sentencing on January 23 and faces 26 years to life in prison for her unforgivable actions.

The heartbreaking story of Susan Leeds serves as a reminder of the devastating consequences of greed and desperation. The senseless loss of a beloved individual like Susan highlights the importance of seeking justice and holding perpetrators accountable for their crimes.
