MoMA PS1 in NYC to Offer Free Admission for Three Years Starting in 2026

MoMA PS1, the contemporary art institution located in Queens, New York City, has announced that it will be waiving entry fees for all visitors for the next three years, starting on January 1, 2026. This decision coincides with the museum’s 50th anniversary celebration, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The initiative to offer free admission was made possible by a generous gift from Sonya Yu, an art collector and entrepreneur based in the Bay Area. Yu, who serves on the boards of the Hammer Museum and the San Francisco Museum of Art, has made it possible for MoMA PS1 to eliminate financial barriers to access and make art more inclusive to all.

With the rising cost of museum admissions in New York City, including popular institutions like the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim, MoMA PS1’s decision to offer free entry is a welcome change. This move aims to make art more accessible to a wider audience and encourage greater participation in cultural experiences.

While the museum already provides free admission to New York residents, out-of-town visitors were previously charged a fee of $10. With this new initiative, MoMA PS1 becomes the largest free museum in New York City, further solidifying its commitment to promoting art and creativity.

Yu’s contribution to this cause reflects her belief in the power of art to inspire and shape perspectives. As a Chinese immigrant and a mother, she understands the transformative impact of art on individuals and communities, and hopes that her gift will encourage future generations to engage with the arts.

This announcement follows a trend of philanthropic gestures in the art world, with institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art also offering free admission to certain demographics. The support from donors like Yu demonstrates a shared commitment to making art more accessible and inclusive.

As MoMA PS1 prepares to embark on its 50th-anniversary programming, including the Greater New York survey exhibition in April, the museum looks forward to welcoming visitors from all walks of life to experience the transformative power of art.
