Naveen Rao’s Unconventional AI Raises $475 Million in Seed Capital
Naveen Rao, the former head of AI at Databricks, has successfully raised $475 million in seed capital for his new startup, Unconventional AI. The funding round, which values the company at $4.5 billion, was led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lightspeed Ventures, with additional participation from Lux Capital and DCVC. This initial investment is part of a larger goal to raise up to $1 billion for the round, as reported by Bloomberg.
JS had previously reported in October that Unconventional AI was seeking significant funding for Rao’s new venture. While the final valuation slightly missed the $5 billion mark that sources had anticipated, the successful raise sets a strong foundation for the company’s future growth and development.
Unconventional AI is focused on developing a new, energy-efficient computer specifically designed for artificial intelligence applications. Rao has expressed his vision of creating a computer that mimics the efficiency of biological systems, a goal that aligns with the company’s innovative approach to AI technology.
Rao’s entrepreneurial journey includes the successful acquisition of his previous startup, MosaicML, by Databricks in 2023 for $1.3 billion. Prior to MosaicML, he co-founded Nervana Systems, a machine learning platform that was acquired by Intel Corp. in 2016 for a reported sum exceeding $400 million.
