Google just made a groundbreaking move in the ongoing AI infrastructure arms race by appointing Amin Vahdat as the chief technologist for AI infrastructure, a newly established position that directly reports to CEO Sundar Pichai. This significant development was first reported by Semafor, highlighting the critical nature of Vahdat’s work as Google invests up to $93 billion in capital expenditures by the end of 2025, with expectations of a substantial increase in the following year.

Amin Vahdat brings a wealth of experience to his new role, having a PhD from UC Berkeley and a robust background in computer science. He has been instrumental in shaping Google’s AI infrastructure for the past 15 years, starting as a research intern at Xerox PARC and later holding positions at Duke University and UC San Diego before joining Google in 2010. With approximately 395 published papers to his name, Vahdat’s research has always aimed at enhancing computer efficiency at a massive scale.

Notably, Vahdat recently introduced the seventh-generation TPU, Ironwood, during Google Cloud Next, showcasing its impressive capabilities with over 9,000 chips per pod delivering 42.5 exaflops of compute power. His leadership in ML, Systems, and Cloud AI has been pivotal in meeting the growing demand for AI compute, which has surged by a factor of 100 million in just eight years.

Behind the scenes, Vahdat has been overseeing crucial projects like the development of custom TPU chips for AI training and inference, as well as the Jupiter network, enabling seamless communication between Google’s servers across various data center fabrics globally. Additionally, he has played a key role in advancing the Borg software system, Google’s cluster management system, and the development of Axion, Google’s custom Arm-based CPUs designed for data centers.

In a market where top AI talent is in high demand, Google’s decision to elevate Vahdat to the C-suite not only recognizes his contributions but also ensures retention of a key player in their AI strategy. With 15 years dedicated to building Vahdat into a linchpin of their operations, Google is keen on securing his continued presence in the company.
