A man was sentenced to nine months in prison after hitting another bar patron in the head with a jug of beer, leaving the victim with a fractured skull, hearing loss, and living a nightmare.

Louie Buskin, 23, appeared in the Dunedin District Court and admitted charges of injuring by unlawful act and disorderly behavior. The incident occurred at a pub in Blenheim where Buskin antagonized the victim and his friends, leading to a scuffle. Buskin then grabbed the victim’s jug of beer and a fight ensued, resulting in the victim being knocked unconscious with a fractured skull and brain bleed.

In a statement to the court, the victim expressed the impact the assault had on his life, causing him to be off work while struggling with physical and mental recovery. Despite arguments for community work and supervision, Judge David Robinson deemed the offense too serious, acknowledging the ongoing and incalculable consequences for the victim.

The judge sentenced Buskin to nine months in prison but deferred the start date for 60 days, allowing for the possibility of home detention and community work if a suitable address is found. Additionally, Buskin was ordered to pay $3000 in emotional harm reparation to the victim.

Judge Robinson emphasized the toll of alcohol consumption on someone unrelated to Buskin, urging him to never drink alcohol again out of respect for the victim. The judge acknowledged the victim’s suffering, stating, “You live a nightmare. I can’t imagine the suffering that you are going through.”
