Debunking the Hype Surrounding Colossal Biosciences’ De-Extinction Claims

Colossal Biosciences, touted as “the world’s first and only de-extinction company,” stirred up controversy with their recent announcements. However, a closer look reveals that their claims may not be as groundbreaking as they seem.

The company first gained attention for creating woolly mice with mammoth-like traits. While this garnered media attention, experts like Victoria Herridge have pointed out that similar gene edits have been done before without the need for mammoth DNA.

The real headline-grabber was Colossal’s claim of de-extincting the dire wolf. However, experts have noted that the genetic alterations made to grey wolf cells to produce wolf pups with some dire wolf traits are far from resurrecting the extinct species.

Despite media reports suggesting otherwise, prominent biologists have refuted Colossal’s claims of reviving the dire wolf. Vincent Lynch and others emphasize that the transgenic grey wolves do not truly represent the extinct species.

Furthermore, Colossal’s plans to bring back the moa, a flightless bird, have also faced skepticism from the scientific community. Critics like Nic Rawlence doubt the company’s ability to recreate the extinct bird accurately.

Challenges and Controversies

Alongside the scientific debate, Colossal and its critics have been embroiled in a smear campaign targeting dissenting voices. While the company denies involvement, anonymous attacks on experts like Rawlence and Herridge have raised concerns about the integrity of the discourse.

Richard Grenyer highlights the larger ethical questions raised by advancements in genome editing. While there may be potential for genetic rescue in conservation efforts, the focus on de-extinction could overshadow more pressing issues in biodiversity conservation.

In conclusion, while Colossal Biosciences has made strides in genetic engineering, the claims of de-extinction remain highly contentious and raise important questions about the ethical and ecological implications of manipulating extinct species.
