Warm Wishes for Hanukkah

I extend heartfelt greetings to the Jewish community in the United States and across the globe as they embark on the celebration of Hanukkah—the Festival of Lights, a time filled with joy, reflection, and hope.

The Historical Legacy of Hanukkah

Over two millennia ago, the Jewish people rose against oppression, reclaiming their freedom to worship and live according to their beliefs, asserting their inalienable rights as bestowed by our Creator. Following their remarkable triumph, they focused on rededicating their Holy Temple. Tradition recounts that, despite having only enough oil to sustain the temple’s lamp for a single night, a miraculous event occurred: the oil burned for eight days, a testament to divine providence. In honor of this extraordinary miracle, families will gather over the next eight days to light the menorah, a powerful symbol of light overcoming darkness and the enduring victory of good over evil. Hanukkah serves as a time of gratitude for these miracles.

The Menorah as a Symbol of Liberty

The menorah continues to symbolize liberty today, echoing George Washington’s words to the Hebrew Congregation in Newport: that every citizen “shall sit in safety under his own vine and fig tree and there shall be none to make him afraid.”

Support for Religious Freedom

This holiday season, my Administration reaffirms its commitment to standing with the Jewish people and upholding the right of every individual to worship freely and without fear of persecution. The flames of Hanukkah remind us of the resilience and strength of the Jewish community, guiding our Nation toward a hopeful future.
