When Rohingya refugees arrived in Bangladesh in 2017, their shelters were inadequately ventilated and used plastic sheeting that needed frequent replacement, posing health risks during periods of high heat.

Seeking to address this issue, icddr,b, an international health research center in Bangladesh, introduced an innovative solution by utilizing Jutin, a plant-derived material that offered heat and saline water resistance for nature-based housing. Dr. Farjana Jahan, an associate scientist at icddr,b, emphasized the significance of utilizing local resources to create sustainable solutions while reducing pollution and deforestation.

During a session at the World Health Summit in Berlin, participants, including prominent figures like Bill Gates, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, discussed the urgent need for community engagement in addressing climate-related health threats and how funders can support these initiatives.

Vanina Laurent-Ledru, director general of Foundation S, highlighted the importance of community consultation in climate adaptation strategies, emphasizing the consequences of overlooking local insights. Collaborating closely with frontline communities is crucial in confronting health impacts arising from climate change, as demonstrated in regions like Bangladesh and the Amazon.

Recent climate changes have disrupted traditional ways of life in the Amazon, leading to food insecurity and psychological effects among indigenous communities. Daniel Aristizábal, regional head for the Amazon at the Amazon Conservation Team, stressed the importance of integrating traditional knowledge with modern practices to adapt to the changing environment.

Dr. Gabriel Leung, executive director of the Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, highlighted the significance of data and digital infrastructure in addressing climate-health challenges, emphasizing the need for a unified approach to measurement and analysis.

The World Health Summit served as a platform for sharing successful climate-health interventions and laying the groundwork for further collaboration and innovation in this critical field.

The year 2020 has brought unprecedented challenges and changes to the world. From a global pandemic to widespread social unrest, people around the globe have been forced to adapt to a new way of life. As we look ahead to 2021, many are wondering what the future holds and how we can move forward in a positive direction.

One of the key issues that has dominated headlines in 2020 is the COVID-19 pandemic. The virus has swept across the world, infecting millions and causing widespread economic disruption. While vaccines are now being distributed and there is hope on the horizon, the effects of the pandemic will be felt for years to come. In 2021, it will be crucial for governments, businesses, and individuals to work together to rebuild and recover from the impacts of the pandemic.

Another major issue that has come to the forefront in 2020 is systemic racism and social injustice. The deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others have sparked protests and calls for change around the world. In 2021, it will be essential for society to continue to address these issues and work towards creating a more equitable and just world for all.

In addition to these pressing issues, the year 2020 has also highlighted the importance of environmental sustainability. The ongoing climate crisis, along with natural disasters such as wildfires and hurricanes, serve as reminders of the urgent need to protect our planet. In 2021, it will be crucial for governments and businesses to take action to reduce carbon emissions and promote renewable energy sources.

As we look ahead to 2021, it is clear that there are many challenges facing the world. However, there is also hope and opportunity for positive change. By working together and taking action, we can overcome these challenges and create a brighter future for all. Let us enter the new year with a sense of determination and optimism, ready to tackle whatever comes our way.
