Regulated industries present a significant challenge for startups, adding an extra layer of complexity to an already difficult journey. In a recent episode of Build Mode, Startup Battlefield editor Isabelle Johannessen delved into the world of two founders who are navigating these challenges head-on to disrupt industries ripe for change, despite the regulatory hurdles they face.

First up on the podcast is Gabriel Sanchez, CEO and co-founder of Enspectra Health. The company has developed a device that aims to eliminate the need for dermatologist skin biopsies. Sanchez shares his decade-long journey to obtaining FDA clearance for their innovative technology. Throughout the interview, he provides valuable insights for entrepreneurs going through a lengthy regulatory process, emphasizing the importance of strategic planning and maintaining team morale amidst uncertainties.

Next, Johannessen speaks with Tom Harries, co-founder of Earth Funeral, an end-of-life startup that has created a groundbreaking process to transform human remains into soil. While Earth Funeral did not have to navigate the FDA approval process like Enspectra Health, the company faced its own set of legislative challenges. Launching at a time when their alternative burial method was only legal in one state, Harries highlights the importance of navigating legislative bodies and appealing to voters who may be hesitant to embrace a new approach to laying loved ones to rest.

New episodes of Build Mode are released every Thursday. Listeners can subscribe to the podcast or watch on YouTube for more insights from Isabelle Johannessen. The podcast is produced and edited by Maggie Nye, with audience development led by Morgan Little. Special thanks are extended to the Foundry and Cheddar video teams for their support.

In conclusion, the journey of building a startup in regulated industries may be fraught with challenges, but as demonstrated by the founders of Enspectra Health and Earth Funeral, with careful planning, perseverance, and innovation, success is attainable even in the face of regulatory obstacles.
