The New York Mets made a splash in the offseason by signing two-time National League reliever of the year, Devin Williams. Williams, who previously played for the Milwaukee Brewers, agreed to a lucrative three-year, $51 million deal with the Mets on December 3, 2026. The 31-year-old pitcher had a stellar run with the Brewers from 2019 to 2024, where he dominated the NL with his impressive performance on the mound. Now, he looks forward to showcasing his skills once again in the league, this time with the Mets.

During his prime in Milwaukee, Williams was virtually unhittable, which caught the attention of the New York Yankees. In a trade deal, the Yankees acquired Williams in exchange for Nestor Cortes, Caleb Durbin, and cash considerations on a one-year rental contract. However, Williams struggled during his stint with the Yankees, posting a disappointing 4.79 ERA and just 18 saves in 67 appearances. His performance led to a career-worst -0.3 fWAR, causing frustration among Yankee fans and prompting the team to move him to a setup role.

Despite the challenges he faced with the Yankees, Williams found a new opportunity with the Mets, who saw potential in him to replace the departing Edwin Diaz. Diaz, a two-time NL Reliever of the Year, had been a key player for the Mets for seven seasons before his departure.

To strengthen their bullpen further, the Mets also signed Luke Weaver, another former Yankees reliever/closer, to a two-year, $22 million deal. Weaver, who joined the Yankees in 2023, proved himself as a reliable asset in the bullpen, especially during Williams’ struggles. He excelled in the closer role, saving eight games in 64 appearances and solidifying his position as a valuable player for the team.

With the addition of Williams and Weaver, the Mets have bolstered their bullpen and are poised to make a strong impact in the upcoming season. The team’s strategic acquisitions reflect their commitment to building a competitive roster and contending for a championship title. As the new season approaches, all eyes will be on Williams and Weaver as they aim to contribute to the Mets’ success on the field.

In conclusion, the Mets’ decision to sign Devin Williams and Luke Weaver demonstrates their dedication to strengthening their pitching staff and improving their chances of success in the upcoming season. With these talented relievers on board, the Mets are primed for a competitive and exciting season ahead.
