In the college football playoffs this year, Tulane from the AAC and JMU from the Sun Belt Conference secured spots in the 12-team tournament. Unfortunately, Tulane’s journey was cut short as they faced a 41-10 defeat against Ole Miss in the first round. Coach Jon Sumrall, who will be moving on to coach the Florida Gators next year, led his team in their final game before departing.

Similarly, James Madison is currently struggling against the Oregon Ducks, and their fate in the playoffs hangs in the balance. These outcomes prompted fans on social media to question the playoff selection committee’s decision to include these Group of Five teams in the national championship race.

“I’m glad these schools were able to print CFP shirts and hats, make the playoff posters and promote their program. but these matchups are so bad for the sport. No one wants to watch this nonsense,” commented one fan.

Another fan expressed, “It’s time to admit that these DEI (Didn’t Earn It) Group of 5 teams have no business being in the college football playoffs. Vanderbilt, Notre Dame and several others would be more deserving and competitive. This is a joke.”

The sentiment was echoed by others, with fans stating that JMU and Tulane had no business in the playoffs and that teams like Vanderbilt and Notre Dame were more deserving. Criticisms were also directed at the playoff selection committee for their decisions.

Jon Sumrall led Tulane to an 11-2 record in the regular season, culminating in a conference title win against North Texas. On the other hand, JMU finished with a 12-1 record and secured the Sun Belt Conference title by defeating Troy.

In a poignant turn of events, Jon Sumrall faced personal tragedy as he received news of his father’s passing just a day before the playoff game against Ole Miss. Despite the grief, Sumrall showed resilience and led his team in the historic playoff appearance. In a postgame press conference, he opened up about the loss of his father and the emotional challenges he faced.

“It’s been hard,” Sumrall shared. “I’m not going to deny it. I had some battles health-wise mentally…but I love my dad. I can smile knowing that I’m going to live a life that’s going to honor my dad.”

The Ole Miss Rebels, who defeated Tulane, will now face the Georgia Bulldogs in the quarterfinals of the Allstate Sugar Bowl in January.

In conclusion, the college football playoffs have seen their fair share of ups and downs, with underdog teams like Tulane and JMU making unexpected appearances. Despite the challenges and criticisms, the passion and dedication of coaches like Jon Sumrall continue to shine through in the face of adversity.
