Skilled pickpockets have struck again, stealing dozens of cell phones during two concerts in Brooklyn this month. This comes less than a month after 20 phones were taken during a local show in a growing targeted scam.

During a performance by the emo band Silverstein at the downtown Brooklyn Paramount, a man reported his missing phone to the police. Social media posts indicate that many more phones were stolen during the event, with one Reddit user mentioning that over 30 people had their phones taken. Another concertgoer expressed sadness at the prevalence of such thefts at these events.

Similarly, at the Bushwick music hall Brooklyn Monarch, two people reported their phones stolen after a show featuring metal bands. A Reddit user mentioned that around 11 people had their phones stolen during the event by a group of younger individuals who quickly fled the scene.

These thefts follow a previous incident at the same venue where 20 phones went missing from concertgoers after a performance by the emo band Hot Mulligan. Concert attendees expressed concerns that the same pickpocket may have been responsible for both incidents.

Authorities believe that these thefts are part of a global crime network, with the stolen phones often ending up in China for resale. Cybersecurity expert Robert Siciliano emphasized that this is an organized effort, with stolen devices becoming increasingly expensive. He noted that the resale market in countries like China contributes to the profitability of such thefts.

While pickpocketing and grand larceny reports are down citywide, many incidents go unreported or unsolved. Siciliano highlighted the challenges in solving these cases, with only a small percentage resulting in arrests, particularly when it comes to apprehending those responsible for shipping the stolen goods overseas.

In response to these incidents, some concertgoers have taken measures to protect themselves. One individual mentioned avoiding taking their phone to festivals after a previous theft experience. Another attendee from Italy shared their strategy of placing valuables in front pockets to prevent pickpocketing.

Venues like the Brooklyn Paramount are working closely with the NYPD to address these thefts, with additional guidance provided to fans on safeguarding their belongings during events. Concert attendees are urged to remain vigilant and take precautions to prevent falling victim to pickpockets at music venues.
