Lyon’s hamstring injury forced him out of the series after Australia’s victory over England in the third test in Adelaide. Steve Smith, who missed the third test due to vertigo, will lead the team in Melbourne in Cummins’ absence.
Cummins, who played a crucial role in the Adelaide test, is still recovering from a back injury. Brendan Doggett or Michael Neser are likely candidates to replace him in the bowling attack.
Coach Andrew McDonald confirmed Cummins’ absence from the rest of the series, prioritizing his long-term health. Jhye Richardson has also been added to the squad as an additional pace option.
Todd Murphy, seen as Lyon’s successor, has been included in the squad after his impressive performances in previous series. Beau Webster, with his off-spin abilities, also provides an alternative to Lyon at the MCG.
Despite being dropped for the Adelaide test, Usman Khawaja retains his spot in the squad. The fourth test will commence on Boxing Day, with the fifth test scheduled for January 4 in Sydney.
