Exciting news for camping enthusiasts in Southland – a brand new camping ground is in the works in Otautau, just a short drive from Invercargill. Construction is currently underway on this $425,000 project, set to feature amenities such as cooking and laundry facilities, as well as showers. The camping ground will offer both powered and non-powered camp sites, with plans to potentially include two non-self-contained cabins.

Work on the site began before Christmas, with a target completion date set for the end of April. However, details surrounding the cabins remain a bit of a mystery, as discussions regarding their construction were held in private meetings by the Southland District Council.

The history of Otautau’s camping ground was shared by the council, noting that the original campground, built by the Otautau Jaycees group in the 1960s or 1970s, was in need of upgrades. Plans to renovate the old campground were included in the council’s long-term plan, but were scrapped after the building was deemed structurally unsound and demolished in 2019.

Funding for the new project includes $275,000 from Three Waters Better Off Funding and $150,000 from local reserves. The initial phase of construction will focus on a communal facility building, with cabins potentially being added in the second phase.

This revamped camping ground, located at Holt Park, will be operated by the council and promises to provide a fantastic outdoor experience for visitors. Stay tuned for more updates as this exciting project progresses.
