Wes Anderson Brings Joseph Cornell’s Studio to Life in Paris Exhibition

Renowned filmmaker Wes Anderson has teamed up with Gagosian Gallery in Paris to recreate the home studio of Queens artist Joseph Cornell. The exhibition, titled The House on Utopia Parkway: Joseph Cornell’s Studio Re-Created by Wes Anderson, offers a glimpse into the world of the enigmatic artist who was known for his intricate shadow boxes and assemblage art.

Joseph Cornell, despite lacking a formal art background, was a master at collecting and curating found objects and ephemera. His shadow boxes, meticulously crafted from various materials and objects he discovered, created immersive worlds that captivated viewers and inspired future generations of artists.

The exhibition, curated by Jasper Sharp and Wes Anderson, is a homage to Cornell’s basement studio at his home on Utopia Parkway in Queens. Anderson, known for his whimsical and visually stunning films, has painstakingly recreated the studio with over 300 original objects collected by Cornell during his lifetime.

Paris, a city Cornell longed for but never visited, serves as the perfect backdrop for this exhibition. Cornell’s fascination with the city is well-documented, and his conversations with Marcel Duchamp, a close friend, often revolved around Parisian landmarks and cultural references.

Visitors to the exhibition will be greeted by iconic works such as “Pharmacy” (1943), “A Dressing Room for Gille” (1939), and “Flemish Princess” (c. 1950), displayed on scrappy wooden tables just as Cornell would have arranged them in his studio. The meticulous attention to detail in recreating Cornell’s workspace offers a unique insight into his creative process and the objects that inspired his art.

Experience The House on Utopia Parkway: Joseph Cornell’s Studio Re-Created by Wes Anderson at Gagosian’s rue de Castiglione location in Paris’s 1st arrondissement until March 14. Admission is free, offering a rare opportunity to step into the world of one of the 20th century’s most influential artists.
