Shooting on Pink Line Train Leaves One Dead and Another Injured in the Loop

Chicago police are investigating a tragic incident that occurred on a Pink Line train in the Loop early Tuesday, resulting in one man dead and another wounded following a confrontation inside a rail car.

The shooting took place around 1:22 a.m. near 100 North Wells Street. Reports indicate that a 23-year-old man and a 44-year-old man were involved in a verbal altercation with an unknown male armed with a knife while riding the Pink Line train. The situation escalated and turned physical, prompting one of the victims to produce a firearm, according to police.

During the altercation, the assailant managed to gain control of the gun and fired it, resulting in injuries to both victims. The 23-year-old man sustained a gunshot wound to the wrist and fled the train, later being transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in fair condition.

Authorities found the 44-year-old man still on the train, unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

A shell casing was discovered on the train near the deceased victim. Further investigation revealed that at least one of the victims appeared to be homeless and was carrying a bag of clothing at the time of the incident.

The suspect, described as a Hispanic male with long hair, approximately 6 feet 5 inches tall, wearing all-black clothing and a black ski mask, fled the scene following the shooting.

Police detained the surviving victim for questioning regarding the shooting and an outstanding warrant. This incident marks the 18th and 19th shooting victims in the Loop this year, with an increase compared to the same period in previous years.
