Michelle Obama’s parenting struggles while solo parenting daughters Malia and Sasha were highlighted in a recent podcast episode. The former first lady recounted a night when her daughters were being rambunctious and not listening to her instructions to get ready for bed. Frustrated, Michelle declared that she was done parenting and that they could handle things on their own. Malia quickly apologized, expressing her reliance on her mother, while Sasha, at just 3 years old, nonchalantly went back upstairs to watch TV, seemingly relieved at the prospect of handling things independently.
These differences in their personalities have continued into adulthood, with Sasha preferring to learn things her own way rather than being told what to do. Following their father’s presidency, Malia and Sasha have embarked on their own paths in the public eye. Malia graduated from Harvard University in 2021 and delved into filmmaking, even entering the Sundance Film Festival in 2024 with her movie “The Heart,” which she wrote and directed under the name Malia Ann. Sasha, on the other hand, graduated from the University of Southern California with a sociology degree and is currently residing in Los Angeles, potentially still pursuing further education.
Michelle emphasized the importance of her daughters earning their accomplishments on their own merit and not simply relying on their famous surname. She commended Malia for taking off her last name in her film endeavors to establish herself independently. As for Sasha, Michelle mentioned that she may still be pursuing her education while residing in Los Angeles. Despite their different paths, Michelle expressed her love and admiration for her daughters’ intelligence, humor, and wisdom, enjoying spending time with them and witnessing their growth and success.
