Tamil Nadu all-rounder Washington Sundar has received a call-up to India’s squad for the upcoming second and third Test matches against New Zealand. Sundar’s recent form has been exceptional, as he scored 152 runs while batting at number three and also picked up two wickets in a Ranji Trophy game against Delhi.

Meanwhile, the first Test between India and New Zealand ended in a historic eight-wicket defeat for the hosts at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. India’s batting collapsed for just 46 runs in the first innings, and the bowling unit struggled to make an impact in favorable conditions.

Although Sundar’s inclusion in the squad does not guarantee his spot in the playing 11, there is speculation that he might be considered for the upcoming tour of Australia for the Border Gavaskar Trophy in November. He was not initially named in the India ‘A’ squad for the tour preceding the Test series, but his Test call-up indicates that the selectors have him in their plans.

The second Test is scheduled to begin on October 24 in Pune, followed by the third Test in Mumbai starting on November 1.

Sundar, who replaced an injured Ravichandran Ashwin in the last Border Gavaskar Trophy, played a crucial role in India’s victory. He contributed with both bat and ball in the decider at the Gabba, scoring vital runs and picking up wickets. However, he now seems to relish the opportunity to bat higher up the order due to his technical proficiency.

In a recent interview with ESPNcricinfo after his Ranji Trophy century, Sundar expressed his confidence in his batting skills and the enjoyment he finds in opening the innings. He emphasized the significance of Test cricket for him and expressed his desire to continue performing well in the red-ball format.

The India-Australia Test series is set to commence in Perth on November 22, and Sundar’s recent form and inclusion in the squad could potentially see him playing a significant role in the series.

Overall, Sundar’s selection highlights the depth and talent in Indian cricket, as the team looks to bounce back from their defeat in the first Test against New Zealand. His versatility as an all-rounder and ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game make him a valuable asset for the national team.
