In a world filled with constant stress, burnout, and digital overwhelm, it’s no wonder that people are starting to shift towards more realistic and sustainable goals for a healthier life. Thalia-Maria Tourikis, a certified health coach and burnout prevention expert at Headway, explains that years of overworking and financial stress have taken a toll on our well-being. By setting smaller, more manageable goals, we can maintain emotional stability and make long-term progress.

When it comes to setting resolutions, Tourikis suggests opting for three to five goals at most. Keeping the list short allows for better consistency and reduces the risk of burnout. By breaking down each goal into small daily actions, even a short list can represent a meaningful commitment. Tourikis also recommends writing out your resolutions by hand. This not only activates specific parts of the brain but also helps with accountability and self-perception. Checking off accomplished tasks provides a sense of satisfaction and motivation to keep going.

It’s essential to have a strong “why” behind each resolution to ensure its success. Liz Moody, a personal growth expert, emphasizes the importance of identifying the broader impact of your goals. Whether it’s eating more vegetables for increased energy or exercising to reduce anxiety, understanding the deeper motivations behind your resolutions is key. Doing things solely for aesthetic reasons is less likely to lead to long-term success. Instead, focus on how your resolutions will make you feel and the positive impact they can have on your well-being.

Marwa Azab Ph.D., a psychology professor at Cal State University Long Beach, suggests setting resolutions that align with your moral values. In a year filled with moral injury, finding meaning and purpose in your goals can help improve your overall well-being. Rather than focusing on specific objectives, Azab recommends choosing your top three values and committing to never compromising them, regardless of external circumstances.

By setting realistic, sustainable goals that align with our values and motivations, we can make meaningful progress towards a healthier and happier life. It’s all about finding balance, staying true to ourselves, and prioritizing our well-being above all else.
