Florida Man Arrested for Stealing Hundreds of Pounds of Avocados

A Florida man found himself in hot water this week after being caught stealing a substantial amount of avocados from a grove in Miami, as reported by the local police.

The culprit, identified as Edel Perez, 29, was apprehended by deputies who witnessed him exiting a fenced avocado grove with bags containing approximately 400 pounds of the coveted fruit, as stated in the arrest affidavit from the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office.

When questioned by authorities, Perez admitted to being unemployed and confessed that he intended to sell the stolen avocados to purchase Christmas gifts for his two children.

The incident took place around 3:10 a.m. on Monday when law enforcement observed a man clad in all black attire harvesting avocados within the restricted grove premises.

Notably, the avocado grove is securely fenced with clear “No Trespassing” signage, underscoring Perez’s illicit activities.

Upon inspecting Perez’s Mercedes-Benz, deputies discovered bags filled with avocados matching the ones found freshly picked in the grove. Furthermore, loose avocados were also uncovered in the trunk of the vehicle.

According to the arrest affidavit, the total value of the pilfered avocados amounted to $800.

As a result of his actions, Perez now faces charges of trespassing on agricultural property and third-degree grand theft.
