Mourning Brigitte Bardot Doesn’t Mean Absolving Her

Revisiting the Legacy of Brigitte Bardot: A Complicated Reflection

Upon learning of the passing of French actor and animal activist Brigitte Bardot at the age of 91, memories of her iconic songs and influence on pop culture flooded back. However, alongside the nostalgia, a more complex and controversial aspect of Bardot’s later years came to mind. Her shift towards supporting right-wing politics, dismissing #MeToo allegations, and making bigoted remarks about Muslims tarnished her once revered image.

While many eulogies highlight Bardot’s positive attributes such as her style and love for animals, it’s essential to acknowledge the darker side of her persona. In a time where Islamophobia is on the rise, Bardot’s anti-immigration stance and vocal opposition to the “Islamisation of France” stand in stark contrast to her celebrated contributions to the sexual revolution.

Death has a way of simplifying a person’s legacy, making it challenging to discuss Bardot’s mixed impact with the necessary nuance. However, it’s crucial for us to remember not just her beauty and talent but also the harmful ideologies she propagated. As F. Scott Fitzgerald once said, true intelligence lies in holding conflicting ideas simultaneously, and Bardot’s death presents an opportunity for us to grapple with this complexity.

Instead of romanticizing Bardot’s past and overlooking her problematic views, let’s confront the uncomfortable truths about how her image of “perfect” white womanhood was intertwined with systemic racism and marginalization. By addressing these issues head-on, we can send a powerful message to the living about the importance of accountability and reflection.
