Egyptian football star Ramadan Sobhi, known for his success with Pyramids in the CAF Champions League, has been handed a one-year prison sentence for his involvement in an academic fraud case, as reported by local media today.

Sobhi, who was detained in July after returning from Turkey, where Pyramids were training, was accused of fabricating official documents and having someone else take exams on his behalf at a private institute in Giza, Egypt.

The Giza Criminal Court sentenced the 28-year-old Sobhi and another individual to one year of hard labor, while a third defendant was acquitted. A fourth defendant, who is currently on the run, received a 10-year sentence in absentia.

Attempts to reach Sobhi’s attorney for a statement were unsuccessful.

Aside from the legal repercussions, Sobhi also faces a four-year ban following a confirmation of doping violations by the Court of Arbitration for Sport in November.

With 37 appearances for the Egyptian national team, Sobhi began his career at Al-Ahly before moving to England in 2016, playing for Stoke City and Huddersfield Town.

After joining Pyramids in 2020 from Huddersfield Town, Sobhi played a crucial role in their CAF Champions League victory against Mamelodi Sundowns in the final.
