Over 1000 party-goers descended upon the Coromandel Peninsula on Thursday night, causing chaos and mayhem. The rowdy crowd hurled bottles at police and set off fireworks recklessly as officers attempted to disperse the drunken revelers.

Police reported that a large group of young people gathered at Williamson Park in Whangamatā and had to be forcefully removed.

Authorities were conducting foot patrols in the area around 10.30pm when the bottles were thrown, with one officer being hit.

In the nearby town of Pauanui, approximately 300 individuals congregated near the Surf Club Reserve. When police were in the process of arresting an individual for setting off fireworks in a crowded area, others attempted to interfere.

Inspector Mike Henwood expressed his disappointment at the antisocial behavior, especially considering the well-behaved crowds on New Year’s Eve.

“This behavior not only endangers my team but also puts other young people in attendance at risk,” Henwood remarked.

“New Year’s Eve leading into the morning was relatively calm, with most individuals celebrating in a safe and orderly manner.

“It’s disheartening that a night of festivities was marred by intoxicated youths who refuse to accept that the New Year has begun.

“While we welcome everyone to enjoy the beautiful Coromandel beaches during the summer, we urge everyone to celebrate responsibly and respectfully.”

Seven youths were taken into custody in Whangamatā, with another individual arrested in Pauanui.
