In light of the recent tragic events at a Jewish event in Sydney, Australian police are increasing security measures at the Sydney Cricket Ground for the upcoming Ashes test. The father-and-son gunmen responsible for the attack at Bondi Beach have raised concerns about rising antisemitism in the country.

This has prompted authorities to implement a more visible police presence at the SCG, including officers on horseback and carrying rifles. The New South Wales Police Commissioner, Mal Lanyon, emphasized the importance of ensuring public safety during the final match of the Ashes series.

With a capacity crowd expected for the game between England and Australia, extra precautions are being taken to reassure the public. The sight of police officers carrying rifles may be unfamiliar to some, but it is all part of efforts to maintain security.

This increase in security measures follows a similar deployment of over 3000 police officers during New Year celebrations in the city. Events at Bondi have been affected, with cancellations and subdued festivities in the aftermath of the tragic attack.

Authorities believe that the gunmen were inspired by the Islamic State militant group, leading to heightened concerns about public safety in Sydney. The police presence at the SCG and other major events is aimed at ensuring that residents and visitors feel safe in the city.
