Gavin Newsom slams Donald Trump for Nicolas Maduro arrest

Governor Gavin Newsom and other top Democrats are criticizing President Trump and his administration following the arrest of Nicolas Maduro.

Newsom, rumored to be eyeing a presidential run in 2028, expressed his disapproval of “Operation Absolute Resolve,” a swift military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan dictator Maduro in Caracas by U.S. forces.

“Maduro is a thug and a criminal. But Donald Trump’s proposal to manage Venezuela without a clear long-term strategy beyond seizing oil is risky for America. The way forward should prioritize democracy, human rights, and stability,” Newsom stated, as reported by The Hill.

Democrats from California to Congress joined in criticizing the president, denouncing Maduro’s capture as a diversion from domestic issues and an obvious oil maneuver.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, who recently opted out of running for Newsom’s upcoming vacant seat, echoed similar sentiments. She accused Trump of acting as a “regional strongman” to secure Venezuela’s oil resources. “There is no clear exit strategy,” Harris remarked, suggesting that the move was driven by “Trump’s personal desires” rather than the interests of the American people.

Additionally, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg criticized Trump for initiating a “war for regime change” to divert attention from a “faltering economy.”
